52 Years Strong
By Cate Boyle:
During our first overnight train ride from Buffalo-Depew Station in New York to Chicago Union Station in Illinois, we a wonderful couple named Joe and Carmelle! We met them during the breakfast service in the dining car where Victoria and I began striking up a conversation with perfect strangers. Joe and Carmelle from are currently residents of Middletown New Jersey, ironically the same area I am from as well, small world. They are frequent train travelers who are on their way to Denver, Colorado to see one of their three sons! They made a pit stop in Buffalo, New York for their niece's wedding and are continuing on the journey with another short stop in Chicago! We spent over an hour at breakfast talking to this amazing and inspiring couple who have so much experience taking long distance trains, most recently they took a 17-day train trip on the VIA rail west across Canada and back through the Northern regions of the United States. Not only did they have great stories of their train travels and places they have been but also some once in lifetime experiences they have had. In 1969, Joe and Carmelle both took a trip to Niagara Falls and walked across the American Falls! At the time the American Falls were dewatered by a cofferdam for repairs and tourists including these two wonderful people were able to walk across the American Falls. It was great to meet and get the chance to talk to them as they were also celebrating their 52 wedding anniversary, congratulations to Joe and Carmelle!
