Cate's Eight: Summer by Rail Bucket List

By: Cate Boyle

While planning the logistics for a trip like this one, you cannot help but get unbelievably excited for the adventures that await you. With only three days to go, I have come up with a wish list of things I would like to accomplish throughout this journey!

1. Have Crepes in Montreal

In the Spring of 2015, I found myself traveling in Europe and spent some time in Paris where I fell in love with crepes. Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner a crepe would be an ideal meal for me! As Montreal has a French history and long lasting traditions, I would like to try a Crepe in Old Montreal.

2. Sit in the Amtrak Observation Car

One of the things I have found through coordination with Amtrak while planning is their Observation Car. The Observation car is an area of the upper deck in the double decker trains that usually run long distance west of Chicago. This designated area features floor to ceiling windows and unreserved seating that is available to all passengers. This car allows its passengers to sit and relax with an incredible view as they coast through some of the most scenic parts of the country! I am eagerly awaiting my chance to watch the Rocky Mountains fly by from the comfort of the Observation Car.

3. Go Wine Tasting

We will be traveling to many different States across the country, some of which are known for their wine. Therefore, throughout our trip, I am very excited to have the opportunity to try a variety of different wines and broaden my palate. I am hoping to get lucky enough to get some wine tasting in at some of these fantastic locations!

4. Walk to the top of the Golden Gate Bridge

A dream of mine has always been to walk to the top of a suspension bridge and having this lifetime bucket list item be fulfilled on the Golden Gate Bridge during our Summer By Rail adventure would be life changing! Spanning 1.7 miles across the channel that connects the San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean, the Golden Gate Bridge has been standing an iconic structure since 1937. However, if I am going to be a little more realistic, I would love to walk or bike across the bridge stopping at some of the scenic outlooks along the way!

5. Try Oysters

During my travels around Ireland, I had the opportunity to eat some of the freshest and most delicious seafood I have ever tasted! One thing I tried for the first time in Ireland was oysters! Over the next few weeks, we have many destinations that are known for their seafood and in particular, their oysters! Therefore, one of my goals is to try as many different types of local oysters from as many cities across the country as I can!

6. Stroll down the Hollywood Walk of Fame

As a huge movie buff, I have always wanted to take a stroll down the Hollywood Walk of Fame. With more than 2,500 embedded stars and stretching along 15 blocks of Hollywood Boulevard, the Hollywood Walk of fame is a bucket list item for many people myself included! I would be extremely excited to stand where some of my favorite actors and actresses have stood and be able to take some pictures with their names on the sidewalk!

7. Order Beignets in New Orleans

Trying a Beignet for the first time calls for a trip to Café Du Monde in New Orleans, Louisiana. This French coffee shop, meaning “The People’s Café” is known for its authentic Café Au Lait and famous beignets. Café Du Monde is open 24 hours a day and seven days a week leaving plenty of opportunity for a stop into this famous establishment.  I am starting to see pastries in my future!

8. Jump in the Pacific Ocean

Having spent my entire life living on the East Coast, life on the other side of the country is pretty much foreign to me. Although I have visited the West Coast before, It would be a pretty big deal to jump into the Pacific Ocean. As a Jersey girl, the beach and the Atlantic Ocean is home for me so experiencing life on the other side sounds exhilarating.

With a Bucket List like this one, I am definitely in store for an incredible and memorable adventure on our Summer By Rail journey! Let’s see how many bucket list items Victoria and I will be able to check off our lists before the end of our trip!
